Facebook Anyone?

With joy - and some embarrassment - many former jocks have found each other on Facebook.

A few have posted some really wonderful - and a few embarrassing - photos from their careers.

If you have a Facebook account maybe you have some as well.

There is also a quick and easy way to set up a group for Houston radio jocks on Facebook. Facebook members can join that group and easily post photos and make connections ther as well.

Please let me know if you'd like me to set one up and if you'd like to be an administrator.

This site is getting little traffic since the reunion. While it will always be here for a place to connect for the next event, Facebook seems to be THE place to socialize online.

Ever Changing Circumstance

Recent changes at many Houston stations have prompted me to post a quick call to action!

Nope, sorry, I don't have any jobs to offer the many of you who have found themselves living the "Life After Radio".

I do know that email addresses of formerly employed radio folks may no longer be good addresses. And many of you may have lost your contact lists as well.

If you are one of the many recent "cut backs" in area radio and want to get your new email addresses out to everyone please let me know.

I will send out a newsletter including as soon as I can or you can post them as "comments" here. If you have a Facebook, MySpace or other website where folks can still touch base with you I'll be happy to post it on the sidebar as well.

Now that you have all this free time, it might be a good time to catch up again.

But the audio quality is great and the voices of former KILT jocks are recognizable to a lot of long time KILT listeners.

Ed Cearley Passes

Former Sales Person and Gentle Person Ed Cearley has passed away over the weekend at his home in Florida. Ed was in local sales @ KILT in the 80's when he left to become GM of KYKX-FM in Longview, TX. Ed had just turned 61 earlier this month. Memorial Services are pending for Thursday in Longview.

I'v also had a few emails from attendees who had their own cameras there asking about putting some on the blog.

As I mentioned in the newsletter last night, we can do this one of two ways.

1) You can send them to me and I'll post them.

2) You can become a blog author and post them yourself.

To become a blog author, email me and I'll add your name to the list of folks with permission to post on this site.

I know we'd all love to see all the photos. You can load video too on the blog. So if you have that I can help you figure out how to load that here as well.

The first of a few final things

Howdy All!

The big day is Sunday, and I thought I'd run down a few things prior to the party.

1> All the fun starts at 2pm.

2> This is a private party! If you did not RSVP, are not on the list, or a guest of somebody on the list, you cannot get in. We have tried to figure out a way to allow 'real radio' walk up's in, but there's just no way. Sorry.

3> The event is FREE, so is your lunch, compliments of The Lighthouse Charity Cooking Team. *I doubt we'll run out, but if you want to eat, come early.

4> Smoking is prohibited inside, but there is a huge covered patio outside if you want to light up.

5> There will be a fully stocked cash bar. That means you will pay for your own cocktails. Tin Hall is not a BYOB, and you are not allowed to bring in your own beer or liquor. *They will have soft drinks for those who do not care to consume. I think there are three of you. :)

6> Don't get dressed up. This is a casual affair. Jeans or shorts are fine.

7> Be sure to sign the guest registry and put on a name tag when you arrive. We want to know who you are.

8> Feel free to bring video cameras, still shot cameras, audio recording devices, whatever you like. If you do not have them do not worry as we will have a pro photographer and video guy on site. We still have not heard from the live streaming guys-but I'll post the URL if we do.

9> Directions can be found at www.tinhall.com, or you can go to www.mapquest.com. The address is 14800 Huffmeister-Cypress, Texas, 77410.

Finally, be sure to check the BLOG after the event. www.lifeafterradio.blogspot.com This will be the site that has all the follow up info about pictures, videos, and anything else. We also make announcements periodically during the party.

At this point, it looks as though our reunion will be at Tin Hall on Sunday, July 27th. There will not be a charge to get into the event. Doors open at 2:00. There is no dress code.

Did ya'll see I got the blog mentioned in the Taylor On Radio Newsletter many of us subscibe to from Radio-Info?

That may explain why my email box was full of inquiries this morning. And the blog only allows 100 authors, so if ya want in ya gotta do it now.

The early numbers for the blog definitely aren't "flat".

I have received email from many Houston jocks - most wanting to be added as an author on the blog. The author numbers grow every day. I don't want to play blog police with ya'll (I don't have time and we're all grown ups here anyway), so I thought we might all get together and set up some "rules" to play.

Some responders have asked questions I thought I'd put up for discussion

l) Name vs screen name?

Let's use our air names here. Dontcha think? We have other message boards that many of us post on using faker names than our air names! Since we are playing nice on this blog I think we should, don't ya'll?

We talked on the Radio-Info board about wanting to have a place to reconnect and share stories and updates on careers and lives with former and current co-workers and radio friends. A former co-worker who lives in Tulsa now won't know you by some weird screen name.

2) Should we limit the blog to just jocks or can we include former sales people, office staff, promotions people?

I don't care one way or the other. I'd like it to be just jocks but some of my best friends in radio weren't jocks.

3) What kind of links should we keep on the side bar?

I think it should be personal websites (MySpace, Facebook, blogs etc). While a few radio related links are cool with me - and once we get a lot I'll separate personal and business related ones - let's get the personal ones on first. That way we can all take a look at what others are up to on their sites.

4)Labels? Who makes 'em?

Labels are the link at the bottom of each post that describes the category of the post. It makes locating similar entries a lot easier. I can add a generalization of them or you can add them as we go.

I find on my other blogs that if you get too many variations it is more confusing than helpful.

We could do broad ones like: radio history, on air mishaps, looking for a former co-worker. Maybe each station's calls could be a different category. You can add as many as you like to each post.

When you want to see all the posts that are about, say, old studio photos, you just click that label and it pulls up all of them in that category.

Just let me know.

5. Vulgarity.

Let's keep it as PG-13 as we can. The blog is available for anyone to read - unless you want me to set it private? I'm for keeping it on the cleanish side. Coolio?

6. Advertising

I've added a Google ad at the bottom because, well, if I make a buck or two for my time it's gravy. I will remove it if anyone objects.

I don't plan on selling advertising on this site. But if the opportunity comes up in the future it might be something we can discuss. I'm thinking any ad money we may make on this thing can go to a general fund for out bar tab at the reunion parties!!

Again, I'm doing this gratis - like much of my work at KIKK in the first years of this century (Ha!) - so the sooner I can make this functional and be done with the set up, the sooner I can go sit by my pool and enjoy being a semi retired social drinker! I have a variety of tools I use for all my blogs and websites - many I'm already paying for through my booking agency. I can try and adapt some of them here - including a newsletter so we can send private info back and forth without having anyone and everyone read things.

Photos and stuff

I agree the old photos are something we all enjoy. Who knows the reason. Most likely because we've all been there and have our own stories to tell. The reels in your photo look very much like the old reels we ran at KJCS in Nacogdoches when I was starting out in the 70s. We used TM's country package and the reels could be fired by hand or set to fire each other in rotation after each song (sometimes 2). It was the old 12 in a row country format.

Meanwhile back on the subject of getting everyone together. The only suggestion for a date/time/place so far has been a Sunday afternoon at Tin Hall before school starts. I'm good with that but we need to set an actual date. Possibly in late July or early August.

My guess is the invitation list will spread by word of mouth and email from each of us to those we stay in touch with. I already made a list of 20 or more former co-workers from Barry Kaye and Joe Ford to those who have already contacted me wanting to be included. If we all extend the invite and direct them here for details we should be able to get the word out and hopefully have a good turnout.

Other ideas?

Life Goes On...

My thanks to Leslie and Andy for pushing to put up this site.
At this writing, I am experiencing life between Radio, which is something you have all experienced as well.
It is healthy to reminisce about past stations and Air Staffs. Gives a sense of perspective and progress. That was then, this is now; now what's next?

Wouldn't it be interesting to share photos of past studios in which we've labored?
I ran across a photo that was from the latter half of the '70's at KODA-1010, when it was still owned by Paul Taft. I was working for Ed Shane and Jason Williams at the time, and attending classes at the University of Houston.

Both KODA-AM and KODA-FM were variants of the Bonneville/Total Music easy-listening genre, but on the AM side, we actually produced our own music tapes for the automation system (one of my first projects working for Ed). I don't know who shot this photo, but it was during a reel-change (as evidenced by Deck #3 in rewind mode).

The reels were good for about two hours. One of my jobs was to program the sequencing (with thumb-switches), and then enter into a RAM memory the cart numbers for the stop sets, which were played from those vast Audiofile Cart machines that ran the tape heads, capstan and pinch rollers on an elevator, up and down behind three stacks of carts (not shown in this photo.)

Ed Shane's morning show was performed live from the console shown, using a remote control box to trigger the next tape deck sequenced to play. This was the beginning of those changes from the traditional style of Radio, with a live jock, spinning vinyl on a pair of turntables, and the entree for the automated systems of music playback.

Life after KODA-1010 was grand for me: I moved to Tulsa, married, and had two wonderful kids. Eventually, I returned to KODA...
this time on the FM side.
But that's another post for another time.

This blog was inspired by a message board on Radio-Info.

Many current and former jocks from the Houston market have been discussing get togethers to catch up and "network" - or swap stories about the radio business or locate former co-workers.

If you are a veteran of Houston radio and would like to be part of this community, and be able to post on this blog; please email Leslie T Travis with your work history in Houston and the email address you would like to post under.

Leslie T will be the "unpaid intern" moderator of the blog and try and keep up with all the inquiries, posts and getting reunion details posted.

We will remove your post and your email address from the privileged who can post on this site if you post stuff that is hateful, libellous, useless to the group, stupid or we just don't like it. (Yeah, jocks in control!)

This site is for radio professionals, past and present, in the Houston market ONLY.

Fans are welcome to read but comments will be monitored.

This is not the place for your railing against a former employee, bitching about corporate radio or calling each other names. There's other places for that.

Over the next couple weeks we'll add links to jocks' websites when requested, links to favorite radio related sites that are recommended and other free services - such as classified ads and other stuff as we get to them.
